Mind Over Matter or the Mad Hatter

Friday, January 30th, 2009

“What’s the matter?” people ask. “Nothing,” we reply. So we remain quiet in our suffering, perhaps confused about what is going on inside, and unable to reach the depth of the feeling. If left unattended, “the matter” can lead to psychological, physical, and relational illness. It has been proven for some time that our state of mind can affect the body’s ability to resist illness and to heal.

Norman Cousins’ story provides a classic example of how dealing with emotions, attitude, and mental health can improve physical health. Editor of The Saturday Review,he wrote about how he fended off a life threatening disease and a massive coronary using unconventional nutritional and emotional therapies. The mental/emotional house needs cleaning just as homes and cars do. Seeing the results of years of negative beliefs and behavior, physicians realize that happy people seldom become sick.

John Bradshaw, a well-known counselor and public speaker from Houston, openly shares his own moments of frustration. When he was 40 years old and on a family vacation, he found himself in a fit of rage toward his wife and children. Confused by the intensity of emotion, he felt as though he had gone into an altered state of consciousness. Later he realized that he had stifled the rage since childhood and that this event triggered the unexpressed emotions that affected his behavior, and thus his relationships and physical health.

The good news is that it does not take years and years of psychotherapy to undo the damage. Expedient methods are available to desensitize and reprocess these experiences.

While at a training on such an intervention, I decided to address the sadness and guilt I had been carrying all week in regard to a phone call I needed to make to my mother. I did not want to call and the resistance was strong. In the process a huge burning sensation showed up in my eyes and with it a memory of her saying to me, “I always wanted you to have brown eyes.” (I have blue-green eyes.)

Though I ignored it at the time, it occurred to me at that moment that the statement was one more validation that I did not measure up to her expectations and I felt empty and worthless. The exercise let my brain reprocess the event and draw a new conclusion about her and about me. At the end of the day, not only did I call, but also wanted to call her, and felt a lightness and effervescence that transcended my spirit. The pain in my lower back went away the next morning and life was fresh again. It reminded me that my body and my feelings speak to me regularly and are calling attention to that which needs it. I did not attend to her remark so many years ago, and it sat there quietly creating a sense of lack and “not enoughness.” It is so nice to have it gone and to feel good about us both.

Brain and body research indicates that the heart has a brain that communicates with the head brain. From the esophagus through the intestines there is also a gut brain. Integrating information from these systems creates a powerful potential for healing. Other “dis-eases” can be alleviated or eliminated by attending to the belief systems created to cope with painful circumstances. Sometimes people gain weight to avoid reliving the loss of a relationship or a sexual molestation; sometimes people react angrily to present circumstances that don’t warrant rage; sometimes they feel threatened by present events that are not threatening but are perceived to be threatening. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, ADHD, fibromyalgia and other diagnoses have their origin in traumatic events that engaged the defense system to find ways to cope.

Using emotional intelligence, nurturing our souls and bodies, and laughing help. Freeing ourselves from physical, mental, and emotional toxins allows us to contribute more positively to all of our social circles. Sometimes we can make the changes ourselves. Sometimes we need the help of a professional. Change is feasible and achievable. Do you find all this difficult to swallow or even impossible? “One can’t believe impossible things,” said Alice of Alice in Wonderland. “I dare say you haven’t had much practice,” said the Queen. “Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

Gambling: Betting Saloon Taking a Chance

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

In the likely case that you haven’t a clue regarding betting saloon games, read on.

For clarification, a gaming hall is a construction that features gaming. Here, guests will hopefully game by challenging the slot machines or trying out different betting games. Gambling saloon games may include 100% determined likelihoods informing them that insure the gambling company retains the upper hand versus the gambling devotees.

A lot of betting house games can encourage you to become obsessed very speedily. Let’s scrutinize the famous 1-armed-bandit, a cash operated gadget with three plus cylinders that orbit when an arm coupled to it is manipulated. The appliance usually rewards referring to a string of glyphs displayed on the front panel of the appliance. Regretfully, casino pastimes suggest the hallucination of ascendancy, thus tricking the customer – the participant is bestowed with judgments, but they can’t remove the player’s fundamental odds. This is induced by the betting room not refunding the entire wager as expected. This practice is recurrently seen at work in famous casino games like straight poker, craps, roulette or blackjack.

Seven-card stud poker is truly a very fashionable casino game. The gamers, jealously guarding their fully obscured hands, place the stakes in the pot that is given to the winning punter blessed with the best hand. (As everybody knows, the coolest bluffing hand may win as well…)

Quite like seven-card stud poker, blackjack is also an immensely trendy casino pastime. Much of its renown is grounded in the mix of luck and intelligence & decision making, and a praxis titled card counting. It is a craft in which gaming aficionados will significantly force the probabilities of the card game for their own good both by wagering & systematic opetations in accordance with the hands dealt.

“Craps” is yet another famous gambling hall pastime making use of the roll of dice. Visitors may place their stakes on the result of one roll, or on a succession of rolls on two dice. Dissimilar to blackjack, there’s no feasible bona fide winning system you could profit from to improve the odds.

Roulette is another notable game of chance — a croupier twists a roulette wheel that accommodates a set of precisely thirtyseven (applies to classical roulette) or precisely 38 (Vegas roulette) distinctively numbered receptacles in which the ball will come to lie, which defines the winning number and the accompanying sequences. When the player has put money on a single number which is successful so he is really having a streak of luck, the return is thirty five to one, the initial pledge is given back. Consequently in total it is multiplied by a factor of 36.

“Prep” Your Customer

Monday, January 26th, 2009

When I first moved to Seattle, I worked for 9 years as a paint contractor. It is amazing the lessons I learned from this field, that I now carry into the field of sales. For example, before anyone can paint, you must plan what colors and textures you would want. You must have a vision of the finished product before you start. Next will come the preparation work. Before you apply a long-lasting, beautiful finish, you must “prep” the surface by washing, spackling, caulking, or priming. The actual painting comes only after you have spent countless hours preparing for it.

Vision

In sales, you must have a clear vision of what you do, and where the process will lead us. Much like visualizing how something will look when we have completed applying our finish, you also must have a vision of a quality presentation on the benefits of your service or product.

Preparation

Preparing our sales presentation requires that you accumulate all of the necessary information, and gather the needs or desires of our prospect. Just like sanding, priming, and spackling insures adhesion of a paint to the surface, your gathered information will bond your presentation and demonstration the prospects’ interest. Much time and work will go into this part of the process, and the “glory” part; the actual selling, will have to wait until we are satisfied that we have all of the information.

Finish

If all necessary “prep” work is done, and the surface is ready then the finish is applied. Just like painting, the sales process should continue only when the prospects’ needs have been completely understood, and you have set the stage for your solution. This will insure a long-lasting, and beautiful relationship with the client, and set you apart from the “average”. Now you can tailor your presentation to your client.

So, if you spend a little more time on the prep work (gathering information and building rapport), then your finish (presentation and demonstration) will adhere better, and yield a more desirable outcome.

What Would You Do If It Was You?

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

You are the architect of a goal that you are passionate about. You have just designed the most beautiful structure you have ever seen. It has consumed your waking and sleeping hours for months now. It is your baby and you can see it, taste it, almost touch it, but your contractor doesn’t believe that he can build it.

It is too fantastic he says and out of his league. There is no way that a building like that could maintain its integrity built on a slope like that. How can you even get men over there when there is no road or bridge? It is impossible to build it the way you want. Can you change it? Make it less grand?

No said the architect, I want it this way. This is what I want and I can see it. I have been dreaming about this for so long and it consumes me. I know that it is possible. Please trust me. It can be done. I don’t think so said the contractor, and this went back and forth for many weeks. Now they are both stuck. What should the architect do?

What would you do? Do you hire a new contractor, someone who willing to take a risk and build something they have never done before? Would you be able to trust them? OR, would you reduce the vision like the first contractor said, and stay with him?

Most folks respond adamantly that they would hire a contractor who is willing to work with them and give them what they want. Says K “I would find an architect that caught fire with my vision and wanted to dialogue about it and co-create it with me. I would look for someone who had the absolute passion and enthusiasm that I did for what I was doing.” How about you? Do you have your answer?

What if I told you that YOU were the architect? Oh, and you are the contractor too.

Every day millions of people just like you have dreams and goals and desires that their very own architect designs for them, and every day they set that dream aside because their contractor says NO, it’s not possible!!

Why are you so adamant that you would find someone to give you what you really want, when every day you smother your real passion to start a business of your own. Your dream of becoming a full time painter or the author of published a book lies unfulfilled? Don’t let your dreams die or be diluted when you can have it all. There is an old Native American Proverb and it goes like this, “I seek strength, not to be greater than my brother, but to fight my greatest enemy … myself. – anonymous Native American Proverb

Now that you recognize the war inside, why don’t you let your architect win a round and see where it takes you? If you have a passion for something that consumes you than don’t let anything or anyone get in your way of achieving your goal. Even yourself.

Can you think of something that you can do right now to help you align yourself with your vision? How could you mediate between your architect and your contractor to get working on your goal? What ACTION could you take to start breaking ground on your dream?

I specialize in the impossible. People tell me all the time that I make things seem easy and do-able. I have thought about this long and hard and figured out why. It is because I believe. I believe I can do something so I can. So can you. Let me ask you again…..What would you do if it were you?

Choosing The Best Wedding Cake For Your Big Day

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

While there are many important elements to planning a wedding, the wedding cake is certainly one of the most important.

After all, the wedding cake is the centerpiece of the wedding reception, and certainly the most important of all foods at the wedding.

A wedding cake, after all, is much more than a dessert; it is a memento of a very special day, and how the wedding cake looks is just as important as how it tastes.

Choose A Baker Who Is Known For Their Quality Of Cakes

That does not mean, of course, that the taste of the wedding cake has no consequence, and the wedding cake must first and foremost be a delicious dessert.

It is important to choose a baker who is known for his or her quality cakes, and also one who has experience supplying cakes for weddings.

Reviewing The Bakers Portfolio

When shopping for the perfect wedding cake it is important to look at the portfolio of the baker.

Any baker who has supplied cakes to weddings in the past should have an extensive portfolio of pictures showing those cakes in all their glory.

Not only will a glance at this portfolio of work give you a good idea of the skill of the baker but it may give you some ideas for the elements you want on your own wedding cake.

Choosing The Flavors For Your Wedding Cake

The flavor of the wedding cake is an important consideration as well.

While the traditional white wedding cake with white whipped frosting is still the most popular choice, these days there are a number of other flavor choices, including chocolate, strawberry and even orange.

In addition, there are a number of excellent filled wedding cakes that combine a variety of different flavors into one great package.

No matter what type of wedding cake you choose, however, it is important to get that wedding cake on order as quickly as possible.

The bakers who specialize in creating these wedding cakes are often very busy, and it is important to order that wedding cake as early as possible to make sure it is ready in time for the big day.

Choosing the perfect wedding cake can be a lot of fun, but it is important to give the choice of wedding cake the seriousness that it deserves.

The Easiest Way To Achieve Happiness

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

People always think that what they want is money, relationship, material possessions, but what they truly want is happiness. Wealth, health and relationship are just the rewards of being happy. Happiness is a state of vibration that is in harmony with the universe. As you have already known, the same frequency vibrations tend to attract each other, so the vibration of happiness is going to attract more wealth, better relationship and better health, since these things is going to add more happiness to your life, and they are in the same vibration. If you go after money, you may not get it, if you go after happiness, money will flow to you. The same apply to relationship and health.

I believe the ultimate goal in life is to achieve a state of well being, or we can simply say happiness.

Is there an easier way to achieve happiness? The answer is Yes! and I am now going to show you how.

I had learned one phrase from Dr Wayne Dyer, and I would never forget. The phrase is ” How may I serve?”. Dr dyer said that before his seminars, he will always sit for mediation, and repeat the phrase as a mantra “How may I serve… How may I serve?”. He never bring any notes with him, and when he speaks, the words just keep flowing to him. He knows exactly what to say, and what to teach. Dr Wayne Dyer is one of my best role model. He has achieved great success in almost every ear of his life. I believe the one single most important element to Dr Wayne Dyer’s success is this mantra “How may I serve?”

Ask yourself now “How may I serve?”. This is the key to ultimate happiness and fulfillment in life. I would like to share some of my own experience.

The most enjoyable things in my life at this stage is writing articles that can makes a difference in the quality of people’s life. Whenever I finish writing an article, I feel the positive energy all over my body. I sometime get puzzled myself, where does this information come from? How do I write so many articles, having thousands of people read my articles every week? I finally realized the secret is within this phrase “How may I serve?”.

Every time when I write a article for my newsletter, I sit in front of my computer, and ask myself “How may I serve, How may I serve?”. Strangely, the ideas will come, and I put my fingers on the keyboards, then words just starts following.

I didn’t understand how this process works, until one day I realized that the information does not come from me, it comes from God (or the Higher Intelligence), I am only an channel for the information to flow. I am a channel that God has created to serve the world. Because that is what I am here for, so when I am serving, I feel positive energy, and I feel happy.

I have learned that my life purpose is to serve, and I think this is applicable to everyone. This is what God wants me to learn, this is also what God wants you to learn. You will only truly feel fulfilled once you realize this truth. “Your life purpose is to serve” I am sure you have heard of that “If you seek happiness for yourself, it will always elude you, if you seek happiness for others, you will find it for yourself.” I know this is why every time I finish an article, I feel so happy, because I know that my article is going to benefits thousands of people, and It is going to change the world to some extend. Maybe 90% of people will not take any action after they read my article, this is nature of human being., but I know as long as they read, their awareness is expanded, and they will see the difference in the long run. For that less than 10% of people who do take actions, I know my words are going to change their lives for the better. What a great thing I am doing! I am proud of it. I am feeling so happy about it.

So start from today, find ways to help other people . Find some way to serve. You will get addicted to it, because it is so enjoyable to help. Your help is going to change people’s lives.

I often receive emails from my subscribers asking me for help. You can imagine how happy I am after I answer their questions? I know that this person’s life is going to change for the better just because of my words. How wonderful that is!

Here is an secret I want you to know…

The person who benefits the most is not the one you give service to, but yourself. You may find it sounds strange, but this is true, and it is governed by the universal law of cause and effect. Anything you cause others to experience will come back to you, and multiplied. If you cause others to experience love, you will find more love in your life; If you cause others to have wealth, you will have more in your own life; if you cause others to succeed, you are guaranteed to succeed. This is the law of the universe, and it never fails.

So, whatever you want to experience in your life, cause others to experience first. This is the most powerful ways to attain your own desires, and the easiest way to achieve happiness

Defining the Web Audience

Monday, January 19th, 2009

The first step a writer must take before starting any work is defining the audience; who he/she is writing to. At last count there were an estimated billion Web users. Writing content for the World Wide Web means writing for a vast, multilingual, multicultural audience of varied educational background. The web is spreading rapidly through the third world. Though English is now the dominant language, it has been forecast that by the end of 2007, there will be more Chinese than English screens. The literacy rate of users is rising as the internet spreads and education improves. Ever widening differences in cultures must be taken into account as less developed countries gain increased access. Though it is nearly impossible to define such a huge and varied audience, let us start with what we know we can say about users in the web audience.

Internet Users (aka Surfers)

The internet is a fast medium; hypertext allows users to travel at light speed. One click and they’re gone. Think of users as busy, impatient, petulant children with an attention span of about ten seconds, who are on the web to find something or find out something and find it fast.

Now, let’s attempt to define the most universal classification; men, women and the kids.

Men

Men continue to be the most important users of the web, especially when spending enters the equation, and pursue internet activities more extensively than women though not as much as the hyper-kinetic youth. Assailed on all sides by the latest gadgets and toys, pressured at work, diverted by the wife and kids, mind on other things; it’s amazing he can find the time.

Women

Women are fast catching up to men as internet users, though their concerns are more focused on connections with people than business and technology. They still hold the purse strings and will ultimately dominate use of the web. Baby on her knee, kids in the car, dinner not yet in the oven, the house a mess, still plenty of shopping to do, needing the internet as much if not more than anyone; she doesn’t have the time.

Kids

The younger generation have embraced the new technology wholeheartedly, especially 12-28 year olds, and are by far the largest users of the web. Cell phone in one ear, Ipod in the other, parents on their case, friends at beck and call, pretending to do schoolwork, exploring the hottest sites, chatting on IM, listening to the latest tunes, downloading the latest videos, playing online games – all at the same time; so much to do, so little time.

What is the Web Audience

Despite their differences, they all have one thing in common; they don’t have the time. They want it short, they want it obvious and they want it right now. Hyper-impatient, they scan and react; clicking and moving on. Users read only what catches their eye. They look for headings, lists, tables, small digestible bites of text and links.

How to Write for that Audience

Text is seen not necessarily read. Keep it short, simple and to the point. Use simple words and simple sentences to describe simple ideas. Keep it conversational without being overly familiar and chatty. Avoid all lingo, slang and jargon and stay away from the overly popular words that have crept into our speech (really, like, basically). Minimize adjectives and adverbs; they adorn, not tell. Though you may be writing to millions, try to keep it personal and make it human.

Strict rules of grammar and punctuation do not necessarily apply to the web. Keep punctuation to a minimum; periods and commas are enough. The classic paragraph is obsolete; divide text into chunks or blocks. The sentence, the basis of all composition, is under attack as well; phrases and even fragments serve. Use headings extensively and keep them as short as possible. Lists (numbered and bulleted) organize information visually and make it more accessible; use them often. Tables convey enormous amounts of information quickly; use them whenever feasible. Employ text graphically. Typography (font, size, style, weight, leading) contains an enormous amount of power. Readers will read more if they see it. Use it to get their attention; even if it practically jumps out and bites them. The web is a hypertext medium, use plenty of links.

And remember, no matter who you are or who you think you are, and who you think they are, don’t ever talk down to your readers. Treat them with care and respect.

Coaching Issues on Dealing with Exam and Study Stress

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Copyright 2006 Ron Mills

No matter how much you want something for someone else you cannot set goals for that person and rely on them being achieved. The power within goal setting lies in the fact that the individual decides and commits to the actions to be taken and the outcomes desired. Having said that, coaching young adults is different from coaching adults because very often the young person does not yet have the life skills to find the answer for themselves and therefore input and suggested courses of action may be required by the parent or the coach, however, it is still up to them to decide what they want.

I would advise any parent to encourage their children to discuss their fears and issues about revision and exams and the stress they might feel under and offer support, understanding and some practical suggestions like the ones listed below.

1. Make a study plan and share it with the family and get their support in making your plan succeed. It’s often said that people don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan.

2. Identify the best time of day for you to study, not too late and not too early. Let people know that this is your time for revision and ask them to respect this.

3. Use quick revision tools that work for you. Create lists of facts, flash cards, mind maps whatever will help you. Carry them with you and in quiet moments during the day take them out and do some speed revision for 5 – 10 minutes.

4. When revising for exams set a goal or outcome for every revision session don’t try to cover the whole subject in one go, chunk it down into manageable sections this avoids being overwhelmed by the task and boosts the sense of accomplishment by giving lots of small achievements. There’s an old question that goes “How do you eat an elephant?” to which the answer is “One mouthful at a time”. Exam stress is also a problem for some young people and they might want to practice some relaxation techniques to help with this, here are a few.

1. Remember to breathe. When we get nervous we tend to breathe rapidly in a shallow manner high up in our chest. Slow your breathing down and breathe deeply so that your stomach moves in and out.

2. Our emotional state is often linked to our posture so sit with your back straight and try not to slouch over your desk. This helps with breathing and more importantly promotes an alert state of mind.

3. Go on holiday for 30 seconds. Close your eyes and picture your favourite holiday destination. See how different the light is, feel the touch of the breeze on your skin and hear the sounds all around you.

Finally for both parents and young people, yes it’s important to get the results you want but it’s not the end of the world if you don’t. If you really want that result you can find many ways to achieve and even exceed it remember there is no failure only feedback, use what you learn to improve your chances next time.
