Tips for controlling portion size from the NIH

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

You do not need to measure and count everything you eat for the
rest of your life-just long enough to recognize standard serving
sizes. Here are some tips from NIH for managing your diet by
controlling portion size. Take a standard serving out of the
package and eat it off a plate instead of eating straight out of
a large box or bag. Avoid eating in front of the TV or while
busy with other activities. Pay attention to what you are eating
and fully enjoy the smell and taste of your foods. Eat slowly so
your brain can get the message that your stomach is full. Take
seconds of vegetables or salads instead of higher-fat,
higher-calorie parts of a meal such as meats or desserts When
cooking in large batches, freeze food that you will not serve
right away. This way, you won’t be tempted to finish eating the
whole batch before the food goes bad. And you’ll have ready-made
food for another day. Freeze in single-meal-sized containers.
Try to eat three sensible meals at regular times throughout the
day. Skipping meals may lead you to eat larger portions of
high-calorie, high-fat foods at your next meal or snack. Eat
breakfast every day. Keep snacking to a minimum. Eating many
snacks throughout the day may lead to weight gain. When you do
have a treat like chips, cookies, or ice cream, eat only one
serving, eat it slowly, and enjoy it! Research shows that the
more often a person eats out, the more body fat he or she has.
Try to prepare more meals at home. Eat out and get take-out
foods less often. When you do eat away from home, try these tips
to help you control portions: Share your meal, order a
half-portion, or order an appetizer as a main meal. Take half or
more of your meal home. You can even ask for your half-meal to
be boxed up before you begin eating so you will not be tempted
to eat more than you need. Stop eating when you begin to feel
full. Focus on enjoying the setting and your friends or family
for the rest of the meal. Avoid large beverages, such as
“supersize” soft drinks. They have a large number of calories.
Order the small size, choose a calorie-free beverage, or drink
water with a slice of lemon. When traveling, bring along
nutritious foods that will not spoil such as fresh fruit, small
cans of fruit, peanut butter and jelly (spread both thin)
sandwiches, whole grain crackers, carrot sticks, air-popped
popcorn, and bottled water. If you stop at a fast food
restaurant, choose one that serves salads, or order the small
burger with lettuce and tomato. Have water or nonfat milk with
your meal instead of a soft drink. If you want french fries,
order the small size.

Mend Your Broken Heart For Valentines’s Day. Three Great Healthy Heart Exercises You Can Do In San F

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

February is the perfect month to consider mending your broken heart and San Francisco is the just the right city to do it. No, I am not talking about your love life. I am talking about strengthening the most important muscle in your body; your heart.

Valentine’s month is a period in between the holidays and summer. There are not as many distractions which make it a great month to begin an exercise program. The San Francisco setting for this is ideal with the cool clear days February provides and no fog!

More importantly there is no better city to train than San Francisco because of our unique topography. Where most cities have to rely solely on long, boring and flat cardio workouts we have a ton of options for quick, high intensity cardio workouts.

Three great options for fast cardio training that The City offers are: beach sprints, hill sprints and stair climbing.

1. Beach Sprints: Sprinting at the beach is great for developing strength in your legs as well as your heart. It takes more effort than sprinting on a solid surface and you can’t beat the scenery (unless all you can see is fog but that’s pretty cool too.) A great cardio workout at the beach would be to sprint for twenty seconds then walk for ten and repeat eight times for a total of four minutes. This is the Fartlek method of training and has been proven to be just as effective as running at a steady state for longer periods.

2. Hill Sprints: When I was young and had to walk everywhere I would curse the hills of San Francisco. Driving my old cars with stick shifts was never much fun either. Now it’s all about automatics and using the hills to exercise. Much like beach sprints; hill sprints are great for strengthening the legs and glutes, as well as your heart. The best thing about hill sprints is most likely you have a hill right outside your door (if you don’t you probably live close to the beach.) Try the “around the block run.” Jog easy downhill and around the turns and sprint uphill. Depending on the length and slope of the hill start out doing this once or twice and try to build up to five or six times or more.

3. Stair Climbing: One of the aspects of San Francisco I have always loved, even as a kid, is the amount of stairs we have. Long staircases slice through neighborhoods providing easy routes to our favorite coffee shops and create the feeling, for me, of being in an old world time and place. What I really love about them is the leg, glute and cardio workout they can provide. Try running up a long staircase, walking up two stairs at a time or carrying a pair of dumbbells on your climb. If you want to climb it more than once be careful coming back down as you will be tired.

Try these once or twice a week along with a longer, steady run. Of course do a proper warm up before exercising and always consult a physician before starting a new exercise program. Happy Valentines Day!

6 Advantages of Free Weights Over Exercise Machines

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

Meet Sarah.

About a year ago, Sarah saw an infomercial about a “multi-unit” workout machine. The announcer called it a “revolutionary” piece of equipment, claiming that people would see results in “just 2-4 weeks”. It exercised all major body parts and the female model shown using the machine said it “was safer and more effective than free weights.”

Intimidated by gyms her whole life, Sarah knew having her own home gym would be the key to her finally getting into shape. She had heard that machines were safer than free weights. Besides, the machine came with “easy to follow video instructions”. The price was steep, but as Sarah imagined changing her body, she got her credit called and grabbed the phone.

On the day of delivery, Sarah was surprised to see it took up twice the space she was told it would, limiting space in her already cramped den. Excited to get started, she popped in the video, and hopped on the machine. Sarah soon found that she, at 5′3″, was too small to fit on the machine for some of the exercises. She continued on anyway, trying to ignore the fact that her lower back and knees were starting to hurt a little.

Sarah used her new revolutionary machine exactly three more times. For the last six months, it has been her unofficial clothes hanger.

What happened? Sarah thought she was buying a machine that would be very easy to operate and be a safe alternative to free-weights. Unfortunately, Sarah and many others are misguided by heavily marketed hype by machine developers. When it comes to effectiveness, particularly for the beginning exerciser, free-weights (i.e., dumbbells) rate much higher than expensive machines in terms of:

1. Cost. Three or four sets of dumbbells would have cost Sarah less than 10 times the amount she spent on her machine. As she gets stronger, she would have to buy more, though even a full set would not set her back nearly as much as the machine did.

2. Space. Dumbbells take up far less space than most of the exercise equipment sold on infomercials. You can easily place them in a closet, out of sight under the bed, or in a corner. There are even dumbbells you can adjust (i.e., PowerBlock) that allow you to adjust the poundage on one set, eliminating the need for single-poundage dumbbells.

3. Variety. Most machines are designed as one-dimensional. Even the most extensive multi-unit machines will allow exercisers to perform only a limited number of movements in a restricted range of motion. Free-weights can be used in ranges of motion based on the exerciser, not a machine. Use free weights along with benches or Swiss Balls and you have multitude of exercise options.

4. Suitability. Sarah couldn’t use her “multi-usage” machine for certain exercises because the machine was too big. This is not an uncommon problem. Even though most machines have adjustable seats, arm pads, and lever arms, there are limitations to their range and some may not fit the very small or very large person. However, if you can grab a dumbbell, you can use it.

5. Functionality. Exercising with free-weights increases the likelihood that the effects of the exercise will cross over into real-world situations. Think about it. How often during the day do you lie in a diagonal supine position and push weight up like you would on a machine leg press? Probably never. But how often are you required to do activities that are biomechanically identical to the squat? Sitting, getting in and out of a car, crouching down to pick something up…all the time! Properly using free weights will increase the functionality of an exercise to real-world situations.

6. Safety. It seems counterintuitive to consider free-weights as safer than machines. Most of us have heard (somewhere..) that we could get hurt with dumbbells and that machines were “safer.” Maybe just the idea of someone doing a huge bench press lends itself to imagining the likelihood that one might lose control of the same amount of weight if they ever attempted it.

Safety during exercise is more about proper form, technique, concentration and control rather than exercise apparatus. Someone can get hurt on a machine just as easily as with a dumbbell if incorrect form is used. As always, if you don’t know how to do something, find someone (i.e., a reputable trainer) to show you how.

Safety as a result of exercise is a long-term issue. It is not necessary for the body to stabilize itself or the weight during movements on most machines, because the weight apparatus is fixed. Key stabilizer muscles are then never given the chance to get stronger. Free-weights allow the exerciser to utilize core muscles and allow multi-plane movement that forces the exerciser to strengthen stabilizer musculature, which support joints. Over the long-term, free weights are superior to machines for building a stronger, more functional body.

You don’t need to spend a fortune on a piece of exercise equipment that you’ll never end up using and won’t suit your needs. A few sets of dumbbells are effective, intelligent alternatives to buying equipment, especially for those setting up their own in-home gym or workout area.

Treadmills serve your purpose 24/7 and 12 months a day despite of snow, sun or rain. Without any doubt, treadmills have great utility. Half an hour walking on treadmill keep your body firm and fit. Sometimes it even helps you in loosing weight too. Probably the easiest exercise for sedentary people is walking,(recommended speed is 2 miles per hour.) b) Start by walking on treadmill. Set speed to say, at 5 mph to start off. You can take support from handrails but don’t make it a habit. It is supposed to be used only in beginning.

c) Do not use hand rails once you have started running.

How To Reduce Weight Fast And Lose Fat Forever Fast Weight Reduction Tip

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

So you have tried dieting to reduce weight. You have also popped all kinds of weight reduction pills you can get your hands on. To your delight your effort seemed to work as you begin to lose body fat steadily. Then one day, before you reach your desired weight, you begin to notice that your weight seemed to stay the same even though you are still on the diet and popping those pills. To your horror, you discover that the weight you had lost is beginning to pile up once again. Instead of reducing weight, you are now gaining weight. Sounds familiar?

What happened? Simply put, slimming pills and fad diets are only short term strategy to reduce weight and keeping body fat at bay. To reduce weight and lose fat forever, your caloric expenditure must surpass your caloric consumption. Aren’t you doing that in your diet? Yes you are. But when you are on a diet, you go hungry and your body will signal to your brain to conserve fat for energy because your body is built with a mechanism to conserve fat during famine and it will not know whether it is famine season or that you are on a diet. In this instance, your body will consume your muscle for energy instead of your body fat and this spells trouble because your muscle is a great calorie gobbler. So with less muscle, your fat burning capability grinds to a screeching halt.

What about those weight reducing pills you are taking? If you are popping appetite control pills, your body will react like you are on a diet, so the same thing happened. What about pills that help to increase metabolism or reducing starch intake? Sure, they will help to burn a few calories or restrict some calories from turning into body fat, but are enough calories burnt or restricted to reduce weight permanently or are you going to take those unhealthy weight reduction pills forever? Obviously not, isn’t it?

So to reduce weight and lose fat forever, we need to do 3 things.

* Cardio exercises – Do cardio exercises at 65-85% of your maximum heart rate to burn tons of calories

* Lift weight – Train with weights to grow muscle or at least prevent muscle loss. The more muscle you have, the higher will be your natural fat burning capability. You will burn fat even when sleeping. In other words, you lose fat permanently.

* Eat small frequent meals – This will signal to your brain that food is in abundance and that your body need not conserve fat in case of famine. So eat 5- 6 meals at 3 hourly intervals. However, do make sure that your meals are small and that your caloric intake do not surpass your caloric expenditure.

When you incorporate these 3 elements into your lifestyle, you will not only reduce weight and lose body fat, you will also keep the weight from creeping back. That means, you will reduce weight and able to maintain your ideal weight forever.

Identifying The Different Forms Of Herbal Medicine

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

Although there are a lot of positive things to be said when it comes to herbal medicine, is still an undeniable fact however that what we proof we have is not yet enough to make taking herbal medicine completely safe.

Hence, when you’re about to try out herbal medicine please make sure to check with your doctor first if what you’re doing wouldn’t be harmful to your body. Secondly, it’s better to be able to identify the different forms of herbal medicine so you’d know if what you’re taking is the real thing or not.

Essence – This is also one of the most popular forms that herbal medicine takes. Herbs in essential oils are processed through cold pressing or steam distillation. This form of herbal medicine is popular because a lot of people prefer to enjoy massages with the use of essential oils because it supposedly helps them relax more easily.

Pills and Capsules – People who violently resist the idea of taking herbal medicine in its raw form may find other products of herbal medicine in the form of pills and capsules. Herbal medicine is ground into powder to take this particular form. Usually, with this form of herbal medicine, the medicinal purpose is general and not meant to be a specific cure. Ampalaya capsules, for example, are taken simply to help improve your diabetes.

Infusions – This process involves the delicate parts of a plant like its leaves, seeds and fruits. The process simply takes several minutes to finish.

Poultice – There are some situations that require patients to take herbal medicine in the form of poultice. In this case, the herbs are macerated or chopped into tiny pieces and are then directly applied to the skin. After this, a hot, moist bandage is used to cover the area.

Raw – It’s like going back to the primitive past when you’re required to take this particular form of herbal medicine. Not only is the process somewhat undesirable, the taste of it leaves nothing to be desired as well. Many healthcare professionals, however, advise people to steep these raw herbs into tea because it’s said to release its healing powers effectively.

Tinctures – Herbal medicine in liquid form.

Decoctions – This process involves the extraction of certain parts of a plant like the berries, roots and herb-bark. This process usually takes 45 minutes till an hour and a half.

And now that we’re done with the list of forms of herbal medicine, we do hope that you benefit greatly from whatever herbal medicine product you’re taking!

Depression And Anxiety Could Be Cured By Natural Supplements

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health problem, and include panic disorders, agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Anxiety disorders develop due to an interplay between enviromnental and genetic factors. Cognitive behavior therapy is useful for this disorder, as well as prescription anxiolytic drugs.

However, many patients prefer a natural approach or dislike the side effects of prescription drugs, and there are many non-prescription supplements available to help anxiety. Before starting natural supplements for an anxiety problem, be sure to mention your concerns and get a general checkup from your doctor. Symptoms resembling anxiety and anxiety attacks can be caused by physical diseases such as hormone imbalance, hyperthyroidism or cardiac arrhythmias.

However, if you are sure your problem is an anxiety disorder, the following supplements may be of help, and often have fewer side effects than commercial pharmaceutical products.

Chamomile tea is one of the best-known natural remedies for anxiety. Its affects the digestive tract and the nervous system, thus it is helpful for people who suffer from gastro-intestinal symptoms such as cramps along with mental anxiety. It is recommended that patients drink fresh tea made with chamomile leaves, 1/2 to 1 teaspoon per cup of water, several times a day. It is also available in tinctures which can be added to water. Chamomile capsules are convenient to take along to work, and don’t take as long to brew as the tea. The usual dose is 250 to 500 mg 3 to 4 times daily.

Damiana (Turnera diffusa) is a nerve tonic which also has a restorative (adaptogenic) property. It has a calming effect in cases of mild depression and anxiety, and is also reputed to be an aphrodisiac. Damiana contains flavonoids that act on benzodiazepine and GABA receptors. It exhibits anxiolytic activity, muscle relaxation and sedation. Use 2-4 g of dried leaves infused in a cup of boiling water; 2-3 cups are taken daily. Alternatively, 2-4 ml of a liquid extract or 3-4 grams of powdered leaf in tablets or capsules taken twice daily can be substituted if desired.

Damiana has demonstrated mild hypoglycemic effects in animal studies. Patients with diabetes and hypoglycemia should use this plant with caution, and monitor blood sugar levels closely. Damiana has a traditional use as an abortive and is contraindicated during pregnancy.

Kava Kava (Piper methysticum) has a very quick calming effect on the nervous system and causes an uplifting, euphoric feeling. It is also a muscle relaxant and mild sedative. It is helps anxiety, tension, stress, irritability and insomnia. Kava stops the mind from racing, often a symptom of generalized anxiety disorder. The usual dose is 750 mg twice daily. Do not exceed 4 capsules per day.

Kava Kava is a traditional Polynesian remedy, and while it has been used safely by Polynesians for centuries, now that it has become popular worldwide it has been linked to some cases of liver failure in people of other ethnic groups who have difficulty metabolizing it. Ask a health care professional before use if you have a history of liver problems, frequently use alcoholic beverages, or are taking any medication. Stop and see a doctor if you develop symptoms that may signal liver problems (e.g., unexplained fatigue, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, fever, vomiting, dark urine, pale stools, yellow eyes or skin).

Do not use kava kava if less than 18 years of age, or if pregnant/breastfeeding. Do not combine with alcoholic beverages, or prescription anxiolytics or antidepressants . Excessive use, or use with products that cause drowsiness, may impair your ability to operate a vehicle or heavy equipment. Do not take Kava Kava on a daily basis for more than four weeks without consulting a health care provider. Take frequent breaks from use.

Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is most often used for insomnia, but it can also be taken in the daytime to reduce the effects of stress and anxiety. This herb is often included in European formulas for heart palpitations, which often have anxiety as a component. It is taken in capsule form, 500 mg daily, or 20-30 drops of tincture, or as a fresh tea. Passionflower, though it helps bring on natural sleep, does not have the sedative effects of many prescription sleeping pills.

Pulsatilla is a homeopathic remedy said to be most suitable for shy, hypersensitive people who tend to feel warm rather than cold. Homeopathic practitioners recommend a 30C potency 2-4 times daily for relief of acute symptoms, and 30C or 6C 1-2 times daily for chronic use. Homeopathic remedies use miniscule concentrations of compounds to “nudge” the body into healing itself. They either help or they do not; there are no toxic side effects.

Scullcup (Scutellaria lateriflora) is a relaxing and gentle sedative for the central nervous system. It is very good for nervous tension and for nervous exhaustion plus neurological and neuromotor problems. The dose is 10-20 drops of fresh plant tincture or 1-2 dropperfuls of dried plant tincture. Skullcap can also be sleep inducing, but it is rarely habituating.

St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is commonly used for depression, but helps anxiety as well. Use a 300 mg extract 3 times daily. Quality varies widely between brands; it is best to buy a product standardized to contain 3-5% hyperforin and 0.3% hypericin. It works by increasing the level of neurotransmitters in the central nervous system such as serotonin and dopamine. Do not use this product if also taking prescription antidepressants.

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) has been used since Greek and Roman times to promote sleep and relaxation. It can treat insomnia, anxiety, and stress related gastrointestinal upset. According to one theory, valerian affects the brain in a way similar to valium; while another theory holds that valerian contains GABA, a neurotransmitter which has a calming affect on the brain, or else influences the brain’s natural production of GABA. Also, some reasearchers believe that valerian affects serotonin levels in a manner similar to anitdepressant drugs such as Prozac.

If using valerian to treat insomnia, take the herb 30 to 60 minutes before going to bed. It can be taken 2-4 times daily to help stress and anxiety. The recommended dose of tincture is 30-60 drops, or a capsule or tablet of 300-500 mg.

Some people feel groggy after taking valerian; if this occurs, lower the dose. Avoid hazardous activities while using valerian, and do not combine it with other sedatives, antidepressants or alcohol. Do not take valerian for more than 3 weeks, as it can be habituating.

Verbena (Verbena officinalis) is a relaxing nervous system tonic indicated for a wide range of nervous disorders including nervous exhaustion and stress. As a tincture, use 2-4 mls up to 4 times daily. Avoid use during pregnancy as this herb is a uterine stimulant.

Withania (Withania somnifera) is an ayurvedic herb sold under the name Ashwaghanda. It is a very good tonic herb that is especially helpful for debility and nervous exhaustion due to stress. It has steriodal, adaptogenic, sedative and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also useful for panic attacks and phobic disorders such as agoraphobia. Use 1 tsp powder 3 times daily.

Treadmills and Weight Loss: 5 Easy Ways A Treadmill Helps You Lose Weight

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

So why are treadmills STILL the #1 home exercise machines with shoppers? Because they get results!

Here are the top 5 ways home treadmill workouts can help you lose weight and get into great shape!

#1: A Treadmill Helps You Burn MORE Calories by Battling Exercise Boredom

We all know that in order to lose weight, get firm and fight gravity’s pull, exercise is a must! But what do you do if you don’t LIKE working out?

What if you get bored or don’t like logging hours in the gym with all those muscle boys or short-shorts women?

One viable option is the home treadmill, because of all the things it allows you to do to FORGET that you are exercising in the first place!

You can set it up in front of the television and watch your favorite episode of ER or Oprah. An hour will fly by and you won’t even notice that you’ve been walking (or running)!

Many treadmills also come with a magazine or book rack. What about walking uphill (a MEGA calorie burner) while reading your favorite mazagine or novel?

How easy is that?

And the more you enjoy your workout (or the more you can forget that you’re exercising) , the more time you’ll spend burning calories on your treadmill.

#2: The Treadmill is Unmatched For Workout Versatility.

Most funky fly-by-night exercise gadgets only allow you to do one thing. One repetitive motion that your body quickly adapts to (and that means less calories burned.)

A treadmill – on the other hand – gives you a lot of workout versatility so your body continues to be challenged to burn calories.

If you’re just starting an exercise program you can start with a slow walk and then speed it up as your body gets into better shape. If you’re training for a marathon, you can run at a steady pace and even build in sprints.

You can power walk or do a slow steady jog. Many treadmills will let you walk uphill. Some even come with handweights so you can build in upper body exercise as well.

There are countless ways you can vary your workout with a treadmill so that you continue to challenge your body and burn calories.

#3: A Treadmill Helps You Burn MORE Calories by Increasing Your Exercise Frequency

Did you know that a new 3 year study conducted by the University of Stanford’s Graduate School of Business has found that consumers are overpaying for gym services?

The study concludes that most people overestimate how often they will use their gym membership and that most don’t visit the gym often enough to justify their membership costs.

Perhaps the reason may be that many people just don’t have the time to go. But here’s where a home treadmill can help you actually increase your workout time and frequency.

Did you know that experts tell us that two 15-minute workouts can give us the same exercise benefits as one 30-minute workout?

Here’s where a home treadmill can help:

A treadmill allows you to split your workouts up into mini-workouts and still burn just as many calories!

Maybe you want to go for a 15 minute wake-up walk in the morning. Maybe it’s a 20-minute light jog at lunch. What about a 10-minute power walk just before dinner to curb your appetite or fight night-time boredom?

Whether it’s 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 or 20, it all adds up in weight loss. With a treadmill, YOU’RE in charge of your workout time.

#4: A Home Treadmill Gives You the Benefit of All-Year-Round ANY Time Exercise!

Ok, here it is – one of the MOST IMPORTANT benefits of having a home treadmill:

CONVENIENCE, CONVENIENCE, CONVENIENCE

If you live in northern climates you know that walking or jogging in the snow and ice is NOT fun. What about when it’s raining? Scratch exercise off the list!

A home treadmill can be one of the best exercise comforts around because you can use it regardless of the weather or time of day.

AND you can also exercise in any type of clothing that you want (no worrying about wearing that ratty t-shirt to the gym!).

#5: By Using the Large Muscles in Your Legs, A Treadmill Helps You Burn MAJOR FAT Calories

A recent Woman’s World article made the startling claim that, contrary to popular belief, gentle walking is one of the BEST ways to burn fat!

Why?

It seems that gentle walking allows your body to go STRAIGHT to the fat stores for energy instead of first depleting your sugar (glycogen) stores (used by your body for quick energy).

Not only that, there’s been countless studies including one by the American Medical Association, that rank a treadmill as the #1 cardiovascular machine for losing weight and burning calories.

Working the larger muscles in your legs burns maximum calories which means more weight lost. You can even increase your calories-burned by walking uphill which uses even more muscles!

Given all their benefits it’s no wonder that treadmill sales have continued to skyrocket over the past five years with more and more people starting their own fitness and weight loss programs at home.

So if you want to lose weight and get into great shape, a treadmill can be an excellent investment to help you to achieve your goals. No matter what you decide be sure to have fun and make your health a priority!

Massage Therapy does Your Body Good

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

If you’ve never been for a massage therapy before this, one advice…try. Before the massage therapy begins, you would have started experiencing the benefits of a massage therapy. The low lights, the burning of scented candles, the soft, calming music related to massage therapy all contributes towards this serene atmosphere. By the time you start taking a few deep breaths of the room, you would have started to sink into a very warm and comfortable corner of your soul as every single muscle of your body respond to the massage therapy atmosphere.

Massage therapy is one of the most effective ways to helps relieve tired and stressed bodies and minds from the onslaught of daily life. Destination spas with massage therapies are flocked to endlessly all year round. People receive most benefits from massage therapies when they get a regular dose of massage therapy. You can visit a spa as many times as twice a week to once a month – this depends on your budget and need. Some people complain that although massage therapy is beneficial, they find the services expensive and are often perceived to be a reward instead of something that they should indulge in on a regular basis.

But here’s something to think about: massage therapy is good for our bodies, and our bodies are important to us. The condition of our body can be improved with massage therapy and if we value and would like to upkeep our bodies, we will have to consider massage therapy in a different light. Our body is the one and only physical shell that we will ever be given – there will never be another.

Going through a massage therapy can help us refocus our thoughts on what we are feeling in our bodies, instead of what is bothering us mentally. It’s almost like experiencing the pleasure of the massage therapy helps bring our minds away from mental stress. It’s sometimes called being ‘grounded’.

The neck and shoulder areas will be the focus during a massage therapy, because that is where stress of daily life begins to lay its foundation in our body. Our feet, low backs and hips are also thoroughly massaged through to help relax the tensed up muscles there. it has been shown that most times, during a massage therapy session, people feel more sensation when their necks and shoulders are being massaged…that is why some people think that we live from our shoulders up. Massage therapy works extremely well for those who goes through regular yoga and meditation practice.

Although stress is a necessary part of life because a certain amount of stress can motivate and push us to perform at optimal level, too much stress can be distressing to our souls. Too much stress can lead to illnesses and constant bodily problems. This is where massage therapy can help us tremendously well.

Experts in the massage therapy field reckons that we should all consider going for massage therapy at least once a week in order to reap in the full benefits of massage therapy.

Cheap Treadmills – Are They a Bargain or a Bust?

Saturday, September 13th, 2008

We are all looking for a bargain, and unless we have money to frivolously spend, we want to get the best price possible. That holds true when purchasing a treadmill. The fact is most people buy cheap treadmills and they eventually pay the consequences. Cheap models account for approximately 75% of home treadmill sales.

What do we consider a cheap treadmill? Models under the $500 price range.

What lures people to cheap treadmills are the numerous features that are often built-in. Here’s an example. There is currently a ProForm treadmill selling for $399. That price is more appealing then spending $1,000-$1,500. Here are some of the features.

Console with (3) large LCD windows

2.25 continuous duty motor – There are no standards for treadmill motors, and most companies will overstate the power output.

iFit compatible – iFIT is a subscription service where you can purchase new programs for your treadmill. A brilliant marketing ploy to continually get income from customers.

250 lbs user capacity – Treadmill companies are notorious for exaggerating user capacity.

ProTech Impact Reduction – A fancy name for reduced impact that is found on any treadmill. Even the cheapest treadmill have some impact reduction.

Hand weights – For $399 you not only get a treadmill, but they will throw in hand weights.

These are all attractive features, but it doesn’t distract from the fact that this is a cheap treadmill. What makes a cheap treadmill are the components. Logic follows that you cannot sell a treadmill for $399, include the features above, and not have to compromise somewhere. The compromise is in the parts. And except for the motor, you get a 90 day parts and labor warranty. That type of limited warranty suggests this treadmill is built for obsolescence.

When you think about it, treadmills take a beating. If you are running on them, the impact can be 2.5x your body weight. With cheap treadmills the motor, belt, deck, rollers, bearings and electronics are constantly struggling to keep up with the strain. Particularly if the user is overweight.

It should be noted that the treadmill mentioned above has a 16″ belt. Walking on that small of a surface can be a challenge. Jogging is out of the question. In fact, you would never want to consider this kind of machine for anything less then casual walking, at a maximum of a few times a week.

What can you expect from a cheap treadmill? Service problems, especially if you use the machine on a regular basis. There is a chance you will get one that will last the duration. In many cases you will either be replacing parts or throwing the entire treadmill away. It’s often not worth getting it fixed.

What if you are contemplating getting back in shape, but unsure of your commitment. You don’t want to invest a ton of money on a machine that may become a clothes rack. If budget restraints keep you in the $500 or less price range, we suggest you purchase an extended warranty. At least if the machine breaks down, the manufacturer will replace the parts.

If you are serious about getting in shape we have the following price guidelines:

For walking start at $1,000. This should get you a solid machine with a reasonable warranty.

For jogging start at $1,500. You’ll get a treadmill with components designed to withstand the strain and impact.

At these prices your warranty should be at least 10 years for the motor, 3-5 for the parts and 1 year for service.

The bottomline – if you are in it for the long haul, than buy a machine built to get you there.
