Monopoly Tips
Tuesday, August 31st, 2010When you play Monopoly, don’t just roll the dice and hope for the best. There are simple strategies that can increase the probability that you will win. Monopoly is basically a game of risk and luck, but the risk can be minimized and the luck increased with a little clever calculation.
Be clever about buying property. Always buy property if you are the first to buy one of a group or if it will give you two or three of the same group. Also, buy if you will be blocking someone else from getting the whole group. If you can, trade for a second property in a group early in the game. Later, it will cost more. The orange group is statistically the most profitable property. Try to buy or trade to own both utilities. Buy railroads even if you can only get one. This will prevent someone else from getting all four.
Should you build houses or hotels? Put three houses on your property as early as you can. This is better than four houses or a hotel. Along with the orange group the light blue group is landed on frequently, and frequency is the way to get high profits. The orange is landed on frequently because of its proximity to jail. They are 6 or 8 moves from jail which are the two most frequent rolls. If you only have low income property, build four houses as quickly as you can. This will create a housing shortage and hurt the other players.
Some other tips are, never mortgage property if you own more than one of a group. You won’t be able to build on any of the properties in that group.
The rules of the game state that if a player doesn’t ask for the rent when another players lands on his property before two turns have passed, the owner forfeits the rent. Don’t automatically pay rent, wait to be asked.
Early in the game, get out of jail as quickly as you can. You need to be moving before all the property is bought. Later, when moving around can force you to pay rent, stay in jail as long as possible.
Remember to maintain friendly relationships with your fellow players. This is not just for good sportsmanship, but to also convince them that you are polite. If you praise yourself when they land on your property or complain when you land on theirs, they will consider you a player to watch. When you want to trade a property, they will be more willing to comply if they think you are playing a nice, friendly game.
